Utilizing Basic Education as a Tool for Reducing Rural Poverty in Nigeria: Key Insights for Education Managers

This paper critically explores how the impoverished population in rural areas, such as Bayelsa State, Nigeria, can access basic education as a strategy to alleviate poverty. Education managers must recognize that poverty is fundamentally an economic issue requiring both economic and political solutions. When poverty is the primary challenge, basic education often becomes a secondary concern and, thus, a luxury. Poverty reduction and basic education are like parallel lines that will never intersect unless the latter is made completely free. Therefore, any effort to use basic education as a tool to fight poverty must first address, in a fair manner, the economic realities of the poor.
